In order for your high school senior to receive financial aid in college you will need to complete and submit a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to the federal processor. The first step in completing the FAFSA is to request a FSA (Federal Student Aid) ID, one for the parent/guardian and one for the student. The FSA is your electronic ID and you will need to keep it for future years. You can request a FSA ID at studentaid.gov/fsa-id You will each need an email address to create a FSA ID, you and your student can not use the same email address. You can file the FAFSA electronically at fafsa.gov starting October 1. (23-24 will be later hopefully December 1st.)
It is recommended to file the FAFSA as soon as possible after Oct. 1 but not later than March 1st if at all possible. Students applying for the Susan Thompson Buffett scholarship must submit a completed FAFSA by February 1st, which means your FAFSA should be filed by January 14th. You will need to use your previous year's student/parent federal tax information when completing the FAFSA application.
